Christmas 2009: A new perspective for leaders

Every year, I get lots of Christmas cards. Mainly 3 kinds: Hundreds of standard cards from customers and vendors. Then I get some very personal cards from clients, friends and family. And occasionally, the 3rd kind: the ones where friends stay in touch by writing letters that essentially are updates on their entire family as their “year in review”.

This week, consider trying what a fellow consultant peer of mine does: He writes his “year in review” in January, for the upcoming year. It’s a twist on the old “If you had to write your own eulogy” thing…but a lot more attainable (and way less morbid). Ask me to tell you what I think I’ll be able to reflect on in 60 years and it seems an insurmountable task to articulate. But what if, as a leader, you wrote your Christmas card “year in review: Here’s what happened in 2009″ letter now, outlining what you accomplished personally, professionally, spiritually, socially and physically this year, and vowed not to change the letter in 11 months…could you clearly articulate it?

If not, spend some more time evaluating what your vision for THIS year really is…in a more tangible way.
