Are you in it, or is it in you?

I believe there’s a shift every person has to make at some point, if they’re in something that they’re truly called to be in.

I remember about 16 years ago, I was working with a group of financial advisors, helping them grow their practices. College funding, retirement planning, business succession & estate planning, that sort of stuff. It was always interesting to watch when a newer associate, among all the investment planning and advising with clients, had to “deliver the promise”, as that particular organization called it at the time. This was when a client died, and the advisor had the opportunity to bring a check from life insurance proceeds to the client’s widow.

I remember a fascinating thing happened in the living rooms of so many widows, every time I accompanied one of the firm’s associates. Money left behind to ensure quality of life wasn’t compromised, dreams stayed on track, and promises of a life together stayed funded. The fascinating thing I noticed, though, was what happened to (and IN) the advisor bringing the check.

That was the moment, when they moved from being “in the business” to having “the business in them.” They saw the fruit of their labor, the impact of what they spent all week doing. Not the sales calls, the investing, the selling, the money managing…but the true assignment they signed up for in the first place.

Have you turned the corner, made the shift? Whether it’s your work, relationships, volunteering…life’s too short to spend time in places, roles and relationships you’re truly called to be in, and not allow it to get IN you. If it doesn’t seem to be able to get in you, maybe it’s not what you’re supposed to be in. But if it is, let it in. It’ll change everything, and go a long way at helping you navigate your day and decipher the majors from the minors.
